Saphala Ekadashi Vrat 2024 Katha why we observe this fast know significance

Saphala Ekadashi 2024: This year, the fast of Saphala Ekadashi will be observed on Thursday, 26 December 2024. Both Thursday and Ekadashi are very dear to Shri Hari. In such a situation, the last Ekadashi of this year is considered very important, it is said that Saphala Ekadashi fast makes all the works successful. Let us know the story of Saphala Ekadashi.

Saphala Ekadashi story

In ancient times, there was a king named Mahishman in Champavati city, he had four sons. His eldest son named Lumpak was a great sinner and wicked. He always used to spend his father’s money on other women and visiting prostitutes. He used to take great pleasure in criticizing the deities, Brahmins, Vaishnavas etc.

All the people were very saddened by his misdeeds, but being the crown prince, everyone was forced to silently tolerate his atrocities and no one had the courage to complain to the king, but the evil did not remain hidden for long. One day King Mahishman came to know about the misdeeds of Lumpak,

Then the king became very angry and expelled Lumpak from his kingdom. As soon as his father abandoned him, everyone else also abandoned Lumpak. Now he started thinking what should I do? Where should I go? At last he decided to steal from his father’s kingdom at night.

He started staying out of the state during the day and went to his father’s city at night and started committing theft and other evil deeds. At night he would go and beat and torment the residents of the city. In the forest he used to kill innocent animals and birds and eat them. On some nights, when he was caught stealing etc. in the city, the guards would release him due to fear of the king.

It is said that sometimes even unknowingly a living being becomes the object of God’s grace. Something similar happened with Lumpak also. The forest in which he lived was also very dear to the Lord. There was an ancient Peepal tree in that forest and everyone considered that forest as the playground of the gods. The great sinner Lumpak lived under the same Peepal tree in the forest.

A few days later, on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha of Pausha month, Lumpak became unconscious due to severe cold due to being without clothes. Due to cold he could not sleep at night and his hands and legs became stiff. That night passed with great difficulty but his unconsciousness did not break even when the sun rose. He remained lying as he was. That sinner remained unconscious till the afternoon of Saphala Ekadashi.

When he got some warmth due to the heat of the sun, he regained consciousness somewhere in the afternoon and he somehow got up from his place and started wandering in the forest in search of food. That day he was unable to hunt, so he went under the Peepal tree to collect the fruits that had fallen on the ground. Despite being hungry, he could not eat those fruits, because at some places he used to kill animals and eat their meat and at other places he used to eat fruits. He did not like eating the fruits at all, so he kept those fruits near the root of the Peepal tree and said sadly – ‘Oh God! This fruit is dedicated to you only.

May you be satisfied with these fruits. Saying this he started crying and could not sleep at night. He kept crying the whole night. In this way, that sinner unknowingly fasted on Ekadashi. Lord Shri Hari was very pleased with this fast and night vigil of that great sinner and all his sins were destroyed. As soon as the morning came, a divine chariot decorated with many beautiful things came and stood in front of him. At the same time a voice came from the sky – ‘O Prince! All your sins have been destroyed by the influence of Lord Narayana, now you go to your father and get the kingdom.

When Lumpak heard this voice, he became very happy and said – ‘O Lord! Hail thee!’ Saying this, he wore beautiful clothes and then went to his father. After reaching his father, he told the whole story to his father. After hearing the whole story from the son’s mouth, the father immediately handed over his entire kingdom to the son and himself went into the forest. Now Lumpak started ruling according to the scriptures. His wife, son etc. also became great devotees of Shri Vishnu.

On reaching old age, he handed over the kingdom to his son and went to the forest to worship God and ultimately attained the supreme position. Hey Parth! Those people who fast on this Saphala Ekadashi with devotion and devotion, all their sins are destroyed and ultimately they attain salvation. Hey Arjun! Those people who do not understand the importance of this Saphala Ekadashi, they should be considered as animals without tail and horns. By reading or listening to the greatness of Saphala Ekadashi, a person gets the same results as Rajasuya Yagya.”
